Dot, dot … nothing with commas and dashes! The polka dot pattern is celebrating its big fashion revival in 2020 – and especially adorns our blouses in autumn and winter. We'll show you how to properly style the classic among the prints and where you can shop for the most beautiful dotted it-pieces:
How do our grandmas always like to say? “Child, in fashion everything comes back at some point!” You are right! Because while you couldn't avoid leopard patterns and animal prints in summer, polka dots now adorn the outfits of fashionistas. And for good reason: because hardly any other pattern spreads a good mood as easily as dots, which is precisely why it is the perfect basis for all of our autumn and winter looks.
The trend is by no means new: Celebrity fans in the past have included Marilyn Monroe and Minnie Mouse. Walt Disney gave the iconic comic mouse a red dress with white dots as early as 1928. The eye-catching pattern owes its name to someone else …
What are polka dots?
The English term polka dots describes a pattern in which white, black or colored dots meet a plain-colored background. The highlight: The points are often not arranged regularly, but slightly offset. This gives the pattern a certain playfulness and great recognition value. The name goes back to the polka, a Polish ballroom dance that came to the United States with European immigrants in the 19th century. The dance and the associated polka clubs, in which women always wore tops with a dot pattern as a distinguishing mark, became increasingly popular within a very short time. The term polka dots was born!
How we wear polka dots in 2020:
While the dots were mainly to be found on oversized plate skirts in the 1950s, the range of polka dot pieces in 2020 is almost endless. Whether on dresses, skirts, jackets or trousers – whatever is fun is allowed. But especially on blouses, the polka dots have become indispensable this season. The classic black and white version is particularly popular. But also softer combinations in nude nuances and beige go wonderfully in the cold season.
You can find the most beautiful blouses with trendy polka dots here:
The trendy pattern looks especially good on feminine cut pieces. But the blouses also cut a great figure in a style break with casual pieces such as a leather jacket, an oversize blazer or sneakers. Speaking of figure! The lively points have another big advantage: They are an excellent distraction from any problem areas! A fashionable spot landing is definitely guaranteed with Polka Dots!
How can you combine polka dots?
When it comes to styling, the dot pattern is also a great print! Since the playful dots are a real eye-catcher in themselves, the rest of the look can relax a bit. Absolute dream team: polka dots and jeans. With a blazer and simple pumps, the pattern is even suitable for the office. Off-the-shoulder models and trendy blouses with puff sleeves are also increasingly seen.
Real fashion victims can of course also use more than one dot item. For example, a dotted blouse with power shoulders in combination with a coat with a trendy polka dot pattern really looks good. The only rule of thumb: if you mix polka dots together, you stick to one color scheme. The black and white pattern should therefore not be combined with colored polka dots!
By the way, Princess Diana was already a huge fan of the polka dot pattern! But see for yourself:
